Does a throttle controller affect mileage?

It's the question we hear most. The honest answer is that a throttle controller changes how your car responds, not how much fuel the engine burns for a given amount of work. What happens to your mileage depends on how you drive with it.

The short answer

The short answer

A throttle controller does not change your engine's fuelling, so on its own it neither improves nor ruins mileage. If the sharper response tempts you to accelerate harder, you will use more fuel. Driven the same way, mileage stays about the same. In Eco mode, the softer pedal can make smooth, economical driving easier.

Mode by mode

What each mode tends to do to fuel use

ModeHow the pedal feelsTypical effect on fuel use
EcoSofter than stock; the car eases forwardCan help, by making gentle driving easier
NormalExactly as the factory set itNo change
Sport and Sport+Sharper; less pedal travel for the same pullAbout the same, unless you drive harder
Race and DragVery sharp; small inputs give a lot of throttleUsually higher, because most people accelerate harder
i-AutoAdapts to how you are drivingDepends on your driving
ValetLimited throttleLower, because the car is held back

What it can't do

  • Change how much fuel the engine injects for a given throttle opening.
  • Make the engine more efficient. That needs changes to the engine itself.
  • Overrule the engine computer's own fuel and emission controls.

What it can do

  • Remove the dead zone at the start of the pedal, so the car responds when you ask.
  • Cut the urge to stamp on the pedal in traffic, which is where a laggy car wastes fuel.
  • Give you Eco mode for long, calm drives and Sport when you want it.
  • Let you switch modes from your phone at any time.
Background

Why a laggy pedal can cost fuel

Many modern cars soften the first part of the pedal. Drivers respond by pressing further than they need to, then backing off once the car catches up. That stab-and-lift habit wastes fuel. A sharper pedal lets you use less travel for the same pull. Whether that saves fuel depends on whether you take it calmly or treat it as an invitation to go faster.

I was a bit sceptical initially, as I had doubts over check engine lights and errors… The installation was simple and took hardly 10 minutes, and after a test drive it simply changed the nature of acceleration in the car and eliminated the low end lag.

Questions

Questions buyers ask

Will a throttle controller increase my mileage?

Not on its own. It changes response, not fuelling. Some owners see a small improvement in Eco mode or in traffic because they stop overcorrecting, but it depends on your driving.

Will Sport mode use more fuel?

Only if you drive harder. The engine burns fuel for the power you actually use, and Sport mode simply gets you there with less pedal travel.

Which mode is best for highway mileage?

Eco or Normal. On a steady cruise the pedal barely moves, so the difference between modes is small.
